- ICSI has a new permanent staff member. Scott McComas joined the SysAdmin Staff at the beginning of December.
- Former ICSI visiting researchers, Dr. Sven Behnke and Dr. Klaus Wehrle of Germany, were two of seven award winners of the "Aktionsplan Informatik" (action plan computer science) from the DFG - Deutsche Forschungsgaemeinschaft, a German research foundation comparable to NSF. The grant will allow young researchers to start a junior research group in Germany. Dr. Behnke will be working on the building of humanoid robots. Dr. Wehrle proposed to build a toolkit for network protocol development.
- ICSI's FrameNet project was featured in the September 2003 issue of the International Journal of Lexicography (Volume 16, Number 3). The publication, focused entirely on FrameNet, features several articles by current and former ICSI researchers.
- BFOIT, the Berkeley Foundation for Opportunities in Information Technology, has been awarded a grant from the Elizabeth and Stephen Bechtel, Jr. Foundation. More. >>
- ICSI has appointed a new Faculty Associate. AnnaLee Saxenian, of UCB's City and Regional Planning Department, will be working with BCIS on Silicon Valley development.

- Vern Paxson has also been funded by NSF for a project entitled "Viable Network Defense for Scientific Research Institutions." This project will focus on improving the Bro intrusion detection system. More. >>
- The Artificial Intelligence Group has received a grant from DARPA to continue work on the FrameNet project.
- Srini Narayanan of the Artificial Intelligence Group has been awarded a subcontract from University of Texas at Dallas for work on an ARDA project "Causal and Temporal Reasoning for Question Answering Systems."
- Researchers in the Speech Group as well as BCIS will be participating in a UC Berkeley project called "Information and Communication Technology for Billions" which aims to provide affordable computer technology for third world countries. More. >>
- Michael Ellis has joined the ICSI SysAdmin Staff as its new Manager. David Johnson will be moving to a new role leading infrastructure projects.
- ICSI has several new permanent staff researchers. Nikki Mirghafori, a former Ph.D. student at ICSI, has returned to work with the Speech Group. John Moody is working with the Algorithms Group. Finally, Mark Allman is working with the ICSI Center for Internet Research (ICIR). We look forward to the contributions all three of our new researchers will bring to ICSI's research program.
- Mark Handley been appointed to a Chair as a Professor of Networked Systems at University College London. He will continue working with the XORP project much in the spirit of our other strong European collaborations, with the status of ICSI External Fellow.
- ICSI has appointed four new Faculty Associates, in recognition of their close collaboration with ICSI staff on one or more research activities. They are: Professor Steve Weber of the Political Science Department, UCB (working with BCIS); and Professors Joe Hellerstein, Christos Papadimitriou, and Ion Stoica of the Computer Science Department, UCB (working with ICIR).
