This is a practice talk for my quals. I'll discuss work on an end-to-end multi-document summarization system and present results from the recent NIST evaluation. I'll also talk about "oracle" experiments, where I'm interested in the question: how much room is there for improvement with extractive methods alone? (Extractive summarization is just picking sentences to include in the summary; people usually write abstractive summaries.) Finally, I'll introduce some new corpora for summarization, and outline my plans to build a baseline abstractive system based on the standard noisy channel model.
