Mutaphrase was an ICSI based project to automatically generate paraphrases of an English sentence on the basis of FrameNet data. Although the project has run out of funding, there is still a big interest in the program, e.g. to automatically enlarge corpora, for question answering or (coming from the AMIDA point of view) even detecting the repetition of information in meeting speech.
For latter purpose the semantic proximity of the paraphrase to the original sentence plays an important role. In this respect WordNet, an ontology based on completely different principles than FrameNet, offers the right features to complement Mutaphrase.
I am going to talk about the challenge of integrating WordNet into the concept of Mutaphrase and the different questions that arise in the course of my ongoing work.
